4th Fill Coat/Stern reinforcement strip
Day 18: May 3, 2002 - 1.5 hrs
Applied a fourth fill coat and the weave is completely filled over the entire boat. Because I feel that the stern will get a fair bit of abuse from dragging it out of the water, I decided to add some reinforcement to the stern area -- this is not in the Pygmy instructions. Prior to applying the fill coat, I sanded the keel tape smooth from about two feet along the keel ahead of the stern. I then applied a 4" wide piece of fibreglass for additional abrasion resistance. I'll put an additional 3" and then a 2" strip to build it up a bit more. This way, if the stern gets damaged from dragging on beaches and rocks, I can easily sand off the damaged area and put a fibreglass patch on it.

Day 19: May 4, 2002 - 0.5 hrs
Added a 3" wide piece of reinforcement glass to the stern. The epoxy seemed a bit cloudy -- I think it may be from not warming up the epoxy bottles enough before mixing. I squeegeed it after taking the picture and it cleared up a great deal.

Day 20: May 9, 2002 - 1.0 hrs
Going back: - Realized that I had forgot to put the deck reinforcements in front and behind the cockpits. Did it today.
