Project Description / Boat Specs
This kayak is being built by Maddie Millsip, a teenage paddling enthusiast. This is her first attempt at building a kayak. The build is being documented by Maddie's Dad.

Magic Specifications:

Length: 18' 2"
Beam max: 22.5"
Beam waterline: 21 1/4"
Draft: 4 1/8"
Displacement: 270 lbs.
Wetted surface: 23.1 sq. ft.
Optimum capacity: 150 - 280 lbs.

This kayak kit will be built quite a bit differently than explained in the manual, which is the book Kayaks You Can Build by Ted Moores and Greg Rossel (the book is included with the kit). The kit will also be modified a great deal -- most notably, the foredeck will be dropped by more than 1 1/4" and the rear of the cockpit coaming will be modified to drop it a full inch. These modifications are to allow a better fit of the boat for Maddie. It should be noted that these modifications are not easy and should not be attempted unless you are very comfortable with advanced woodworking skills.

The kit arrived very well packed, all the pieces looked very good, and all components were accounted for.

Epoxy is not included with the kit, giving you a choice of brand. We chose to use Silver Tip Laminating Resin from System 3. We chose this epoxy for a couple of reasons; good experiences with System 3 products in the past, and Silver Tip is currently the clearest epoxy product available that is specifically designed for boat making.
