    Paddler retreat in Port Renfrew?

Just back from the Utah desert - got some nice paddling in on Lake Powell. The direct rout from the cottages to the marina launch ram is about 200m but goes down a set of steps - would be fine carrying a SOF, but a bit tricky for a heavier kayak. Going via the road is about 500m. I have linked a...

    Paddler retreat in Port Renfrew?

I can work on organizing a gathering. A couple of days of rock gardens would be fun. A refuge can be a good catalyst for a gathering

    Discovery Island closed

I can confirm that the wolf is seen regularly. I think I have seen him more than a dozen times now. It is not afraid of people, but also does not approach. He does follow you along the shore sometimes at a sensible distance. It is eating seals and other marine life. Several kills have been seen...

    Inflatable PFD

I realize now that when I am on an extended trip I wear a "normal" PFD, also when I am at Surge Narrows, Baynes Channel etc. But on most of my regular day paddles where I do not expect rough conditions (based on wind and current forecasts) I wear my inflatable.

    Inflatable PFD

This link works better for me... http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2013/09/04/uncontrollable-urge-islands-race-accident/ sobering: 5) It is our experience that the auto-inflating PFD’s worn by our crew were not adequate in these rough conditions. Sailors should be aware that the force of wave...

    Inflatable PFD

Sounds like a good reason to 1) wear your PFD and 2) not use an autoinflate one! :)

    Inflatable PFD

I guess I have learned to do without the stuff. I keep the VHF in a case and hang it around my neck. I sometimes use a small deck bag.

    Inflatable PFD

I have been wearing inflatable PFDs for years now (several hundred paddles) and love them. Very comfortable and encourages torso flexibility. My paddling ones are manual inflate - pull the cord (or inflate by mouth), while my power boat ones are autoinflate (when immersed). I do wear a "normal"...
