    Best time for Broughtons?

June = long days, nobody about and big tides. Camp spots will likely be to yourself and the weather can be great. Have had some stiff NW the last few years which have blown all day rather than follow the normal light morning, windy afternoon and light evening pattern. Not too big an issue once...

If you wish to drive and 'car camp' while paddling look at Naka Creek. It better suits this style.

    Johnstone Strait advice

Get a copy of "Johnstone Strait & The Broughtons" published by John @ coast & kayak. It shows potentially available camp spots. I believe Boat Bay is closed to camping and has been for a number of years. Check with BC parks. Crossing from Hanson to West Cracroft takes you through some very...

Circumnavigating Vancouver Island by Kayak Summer 2015

Stop by in Telegraph Cove and say hi to North Island Kayak. If you let us know when you will be in the area we should be able to find you a spot at one of our camps.

Charts: Where do you get them??

You have previously mentioned a 4 day kayak trip of the area. There are few enough companies offering 4 day trips where 3546 would be relevant that I can hazard a guess you will launch kayaks in Telegraph Cove. If this is the case it will be from the boat ramp in front of North Island Kayak. We...

    Trip for next summer

I am very biased but you should also consider North Island Kayak - www.kayakbc.ca If you are taking the bus to Campbell River, the same bus will take you on to Port McNeill. The same with the return bus. There is only one North or South each day.

    Broughton Archipelago trip questions

Best bang for the $$$ is "The Broughtons" Map 630 http://www.coastandkayak.com/orderonline/ , a copy of Weynton Passage current tables and the appropriate marine wx forecast. http://northislandkayak.ca/resources/ provides all sorts of useful links. Steve

    Johnstone strait in mid sept.

Wait for the weekend! http://weather.gc.ca/marine/forecast_e.html?mapID=02&siteID=06800&stationID=WME Less fish than last week or the week before means the Orcas move further and faster. The link in previous post is for motorized viewing; they can mover around much faster. You will see them but...

    the tenacity of tenure?

I, through North Island Kayak hold various tenures for the area being discussed. There is no centralised database as originally requested. For details of acceptable land use, one needs to contact the land owner; be that Parks, Crown or First Nation. A good place to start is Front Counter BC. If...

New in Campbell River, need to find a store

Couple of places to try. These two are very near each other, both at the north end of town. Outdoor Addictions at the intersection of Highway 19 North and the old highway 19. River Sportsman on Highway 19 South just south of the river. Ocean Pacific Marine - behind Superstore in the mall with...

Kayaker saved by SPOT in Johnstone St

Misplaced my copy of Book 6 but my chart of the area shows Race Passage and Current passage with ebb & flow currents of 3-6 knots. This would have them slightly higher than Weynton Passage rather than the almost useless J-S central. The passages are pretty tight and it can be very ugly with any...
