    My new boat is HERE!

Lovely boat, Paws. Congrats. Now that you're in a boat with significantly more capabilities, stand by for your skills to ratchet up accordingly. It's a beautiful thing.

    Pacific Paddling Symposium

Another vote for Ginni Callahan. Great teacher, patient, nice person & fun too.

    Kayak cover for travel/storage?

I have & use a similar one by a different manufacturer for one of my boats (carbon). And I use saddles rather than a Hullivator, so my answer may not give you much useful information. I bag the boat before lifting it onto the saddles & strap it down. I can tell you I have no problem with it...

    Radio's (again)

I'm happy with my Standard Horizon (can't remember the model#). It's non-DSC and a non-floater, so smaller than the one you've linked. It meets my needs for general communication, reporting a problem, or summoning help for others, which I've done. Haven't had a problem with it. I use a stand...

    Hanging Greenland Paddle

Looks cool, Paws. Nicely done. I like those holders you selected.

How do you carry drinking water?

My water bottle goes into a North Water Under Deck bag. Since the vast majority of my paddling is solo, no worries about keeping up while I stop whenever I want. For a surf or rolling session, the bag gets removed and the bottle goes into the day hatch.

    Seaward rudder fix

I like Astoriadave's suggestion too, if you can't find one through Seaward. To me, the design looks similar to the rudder mount of an older Necky I had. It doesn't seem it would be that difficult to fabricate something, perhaps a workable variation of the original design. Maybe some high...

    Seaward rudder fix

I realize this is stating the obvious, but have you tried calling or emailing Seaward? If that & an internet search fails, that bracket doesn't look too dissimilar from other rudder brackets by other manufacturers, Necky for instance. Perhaps one of those could be adapted.

    Boat Care and Maintenance

Since 99% of my paddling is in salt water, I rinse my boats with fresh water. A mild soap gets rid of scum, if any. For glass boats I don't see the applicability of 303 on the deck. A good boat wax is better IMHO. I have no experience with thermoform. 303 on rubber hatches if you have them...

looking for an expedition touring sea kayak

One of the most expedition worthy boats is the NDK Explorer. It's a rugged, capable, gear hauler. Lots of people use them. If you're a skinny guy, maybe the Explorer LV - same hull, just a lowered deck. I tried them & they didn't do it for me, but that's just me. YMMV. For my taste my...

PFD's How long do you keep your before replacing it?

303 has a version that is intended for fabric. I also use it on the fabric seat covers in my Valley boats. My current pfd is about 10 years old & still doing fine by visual exam and in water performance. So no hard & fast answer I guess....

    Skegs

"In a stiff breeze (with the skeg down), I have to sweep every other stroke, as well as keep the downwind edge down as much as I can just to stay on track." Am I missing something or did the OP state this incorrectly? You should edge into the wind, not away from it. If you're edging on the...

Managing paper charts on the water

I've found waterproof charts (printed on Tyvek) for the majority of areas I paddle. They get folded as needed & put in my map case. Other areas, I've cut a chart to size or color printed & laminated.

Questions concerning a 19 ft rowing boat, fiberglass hull

Re: Questions concerning a 19 ft rowing boat, fiberglass hul Forgot to mention - regarding your ambition to sail to or around the Channel Islands, Brian Fagan's book on cruising the Channel Islands will be a useful resource for you. There's also a kayak club in your area - California Kayak...

Questions concerning a 19 ft rowing boat, fiberglass hull

Re: Questions concerning a 19 ft rowing boat, fiberglass hul For paint, you might consider Interlux Brightside. It's a polyurethane true boat paint, intended for marine use. Ablative paints are only for the hull of boats kept docked in the water, which I assume this is not. Brightside says...

Can I Put This in the Water Before Gelcoat Work?

I was expecting your pics to show some tragic damage. Those are easy. I'd use waxed finish gelcoat. Maybe you were joking with the suspending the boat thing & I didn't get the joke. Just invert the boat & put the stern on a sawhorse or similar & the nose on the lawn. With the upward kick in...

    Nordkapp HS with C-trim rubber

If the asking price is "very hard to pass up", then I wouldn't. I agree with semdoug that it appears to have been modified some. I'm not a purist, so the foot bar arrangement & chimp pump would have to go if it were mine. The condition looks outstanding for its age. It is as described -...

    Doug Tompkins(North Face founder) passing

I would be interested to see an in-depth accident reconstruction along the lines of "Deep Trouble." Having spent a lot of time in mid to lower 50's water cleaning boat hulls, I'm not interested in getting into water in the upper 30's. The photos on Google Earth of that lake are quite beautiful...
