    Kayaking Vancouver island

Hi Lars, If I was traveling all the way from Sweden to explore the BC Coast, I might want to visit one of the local, well known tidal rapids; even if not to paddle in or around them but to take in the power and beauty of these areas from shore. These rapids always form in the same spots and...

    Gel Coat Question

I had a black Necky Looksha Elite that developed a similar "white fogging" as well. It was explained (by Campbell from Blackline Marine) that what was causing my fogging issue was trapped styrene gas. That typically happens when the gas does not make it to the surface during the curing of the...

    Overnight parking for Discovery Island

In the past, I have used Cattle Point for parking on two overnight trips to Discovery Island without issue. As far as currents go, Baynes Channel is 15 minutes ahead and 75% of Race Passage. Here is the 2016 current table: http://www.tides.gc.ca/eng/data/table/2 ... r_ref/1200 For example...

New member signing in. Looking for advice.

+1 on tiagosanto's recommendation on the Romany. I am not a Romany owner but I do paddle rough water/surf/tour with guys that do. From your stated goals, an NDK Romany is a solid kayak and (I think) should be on your shortlist of kayaks to consider.

    Drysuit hole repair

Hey Scott, I hope you are well. I picked up that "expensive" ($7), Goretex branded, patch kit from Ocean River Sports. My repairs have held up remarkably well for more than 2 years now. I did not use Aquaseal; just a hot iron to seal up two holes in my Kokatat drysuit. Cheers, Mario

    classifying skill levels

This classification stuff certainly sounds like a box of square pegs and a series of round holes. We have all seen the guy that has invested in every certification struggle with a sea state and we have seen the old guy that just rocks. Nootka, if was putting it out as a group leader, knowing...

    Dayhatch Advice

My day hatch (Sterling boat w/skeel) is used for on-water kit only. Anything for designated as in-camp use typically needs to find another home (front or rear hatches). So in that day hatch, I will always have my 15m floating line/throw bag, a sponge, sports water bottle (summer) or thermos...

Line-cutter knife - are these still made?

Hi John, I can attest to the titanium version of this knife. It has lived on the outside of my PFD for 4 years now. I mostly use it for fishing as it has the line cutter hook and cuts through salami nicely while in camp. I have the Aqua Lung branded version (same parent company). It has...

WHERE DID YOU PADDLE - April 2016

Re: WERE DID YOU PADDLE - April 2016 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQSvidlBXdY I didn't make a trip to Skook in all of 2015, so this was a bit of a refresher to the area for me. The weather was exceedingly warm for a Tuesday in mid-April; perfect for a chill, little rip on the wave. Cheers,

    Sterling's Ice Kap

We showed up at a Deep Cove Demo Day last summer looking for a kayak for my sweetie. She paddled the Epic 16X, the Ice Kap and the Necky Elisa for comparison. Her favorite by far was the Sterling Ice Kap. She felt it worked with her the best on the water, effortlessly going where she wanted...

    hanging food

http://www.mec.ca/product/5017-443/bear ... -canister/ This bear can fits nicely upright in the front hatch of most P&H Kayaks and on its side in the back hatch of my current boat. 100% critter-proof and is my chair around the campfire. I don't carry it with me hiking up in the mountains but...

WTB: performance kayak for tall paddler

Well for the rocks, plastic is fantastic. The Delphin's cockpit is set back a bit from its center of gravity. With my size/weight, I had the seat position as far forward as comfortable (safe) and depending on the wave shape I was surfing that day, I would add a bit of ballast (water in a...

WTB: performance kayak for tall paddler

Hi Paul, I've owned 2 Delphin 155s (surf and triple layer) and would not describe them as "performance" (at least not in the same sense a Vaag may be perceived). Very maneuverable, but fast is not an its attribute of the Delphin. I am 5'9" and felt comfortable in the 155. YMMV. Cheers, Mario

    Waterproof Flashlight?

http://www.mec.ca/product/5029-830/4sev ... f=10+50520 Has been attached to my PFD for two years. Immersed in salt water at least once a week over that time and still works like a charm. Which reminds me, I may just go and replace the battery this afternoon.

WHERE DID YOU PADDLE - December 2014

I typically paddle the same spots over and over so if I was to add to the "WHERE DID YOU PADDLE" threads, my posts here would look pretty repetitive. Regardless, there was "that day" last week when the weather was sunny and warm and to those that haven't already seen this, I would like to share...

    Camcorder advice wanted
