An interesting study of how quickly cryptosporidium dies off in heated water. Turns out that a minute at 72.4 degrees C is enough to kill off the bugs.
I had the good fortune to run into a sanitation engineer while on the Bowron route several years ago. He travelled around the world to help set up refugee camps in places like Haiti and Bangladesh. Basically, a big part of his job was to convince people to boil their water and cook their food thoroughly. He didn't get people to fuss about bringing water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes, as is often advised, since he figured the time of heating the water, boiling it, and allowing it to cool long enough to be safe to drink would kill any bugs through prolonged heat exposure. This study would support his approach.
