Paddler
I had been planning a trip with one of my sons and some friends. I wanted to show them the river side of the Fraser and to do it in spring but before freshet. This year the cool weather is slowing the start of freshet and also not producing many nice sunny days. Due to our combined schedules it had to be a Sunday. Finally a Sunday came along with a decent forecast. The forecast had been morning fog to burn off so we had arranged a 9:00 am start but wound up not starting paddling until 10:00 due having to retrieve some forgotten gear - my responsibility. We started at the Mission Bridge and immediately crossed and followed the river right most of the way to our take out at Kanaka Creek.
We saw numerous seals near the start and also, later on, near the mouth of the Stave River. Shortly after the start we passed the derelict old BC Ferries Queen of Sidney.
Later on near Albion we came across an interesting and unusual float home which appeared to have been built on an old ferry of some sort but I couldn't see any identifying features.
A bit further on was the former Expo 86 McBarge in an unfinished and party abandoned stage of renovation.
We took about 4 1/2 hours to travel about 26 km. The weather was mixed sun and cloud, with a half hour rain shower and about an hour of headwind which at times equaled or exceeded the current.
