There were several links in their chain o' luck:
    1. We were paddling the route and direction we were because of my car breakdown. Otherwise, we'd have put in on the inside of the Broken Group and would not have come within miles of the reef that day.
    2. My paddling partner (not me) happened to look back at just the right moment and spotted their flare.
    3. I had a throwline and knew how to use it. (I can't even remember if a throwline was a legal requirement for sea kayaks when this happened in the early 90s.)
