Has anyone heard of using urine as a field expedient treatment for jellyfish stings?

Yes - it is true. If you get stung by the nematocysts of a stinging jellyfish the urea in urine will act to counteract some of the pain. Not the best solution, but when you don't have any other options it does work.

People also need to know that the stinging cells of a jellyfish can survive for some time after being torn from the animal. So if you poke at one with your paddle or boot, you can get stung later on when you handle them.
