This may be of interest: Paul Caffyn has written a review of sea kayak pioneer John Dowd's latest book, Zigs and Zags.

This review was written for a NZ audience so is a little "down home" in its style, but it may be of interest to people here given John's connection with Vancouver Island and the North American sea kayaking scene.

I've always been jealous of John Dowd's finding those World War II limpet mines in Indonesia. I've found some amazing artifacts in sea caves—cave paintings! human skulls!—but I've never found limpet mines.

I was lucky to get a signed hard copy last Christmas and I loved the book. It brought me back to the 70's and 80's backpacking and adventuring in different parts of the world. John writing is so real and honest and a pretty good writer.
If you did camp and meet John on Vargas, his other book that he co-wrote with his wife Bea about living on Vargas Island has beautiful photos. Great book for a coffee table.

Yes, that's correct. John may still have some Zigs and Zags hard copy at home but you would have to contact him. My friend went to knock at his door and luckily he was there but that was last December and he already had a limited amount. Hopefully he'll get some in print again with his publisher.

If John lived on Vargas, I might have met him. Vargas was my first real expedition (Jones Island doesn't count). I had someone with even less experience with me and had planned a day trip from north Vargas over to Whitesand Cove (3.3 Nm). "This guy" came down to the beach, looked at the weather (and us), and when I mentioned the crossing, he said, "That's quite a commitment." It was more the way he said it, rather than the words themselves. So we stayed on Vargas. It was the right decision.

Yes, hopefully more printed copies do become available, I'd like to get a copy of his book. E-books don't interest me, I what to read a physical copy.
