I got rid of my Corolla a couple of weeks ago and replaced it with a full size pickup truck so now I need some way to transport my kayak. Any one have any ideas, plans, etc. for a quick to build rack for transporting my boat? I saw a ladder rack at Princess Auto that's rated for 250 lbs and though something like that might work?

Are you rocking a canopy ?
Looking for a permanent or removable system..

Well the 500lbs system is 20 more and looks way better..

How much was the ladder rack at PA ?

depending on how handy you are you could make something but for 140 bucks.. thats pretty cheap
I made a metal rack for my pathfinder and it was under 20 bucks of metal. But not everyone has the tools to make that work..

The 500 pound system requires drilling holes into the bed which I'd rather avoid. I'm looking for something temporary that can easily handle my boat.

I'm not handy with metal at all.

ps. no canopy.

Here's some images of what other folks do. I took these last August at the Bowron Lakes trailhead. Maybe some ideas for you...

Good luck.

Sorry Andy

I assumed the PA system would fit into the bed rail holes strange that it requires drilling ;(. Not sure if some modification you can make this work ?

Hey Andy,

I went the ladder rack route myself. I found a used one on Craigslist and added some foam to cushion the ride for the boats. it will easily hold three slim kayaks or 1 slim and one wide double. having the three bars under the boats also makes for a very secure tie down. With this rack I don't even worry about putting a bow or stern line to the bumpers.

Thanks Greg.
I've always thought Lake Powell would be a scenic place to paddle, but I've been put off by all the boats.
