Last week i camped at Sandy island for the first time and it was a wonderful experience. At low tide there were numerous sand dollar expose and exploring along seal islets shoreline was so much fun.

Please tell us a little more about your watercraft. I started out sailing decades ago and shifted to kayaking for the simplicity (storage, gear, tithing to West Marine every Sunday, less draft, etc.). I like the versatility of your vessel. Please provide a link where I can find out more about it.

Yes, it is the ultimate hybrid Sailing Kayak for sure! I started out from a Sit-Inside-Kayak, to a Sit-on-Top and Made my way to the crossover!
If you enjoy sailing ⛵️ then you can also get a Jib/spinnaker added as well. Here's the link to my older upload recorded from my iphone

I will try and upload the smoother sailing experience from Denman last week. Stay tuned!
With Trampolines on both side, you're guaranteed to carry more dry bags offcourse... LOL .
The Tandem is even better if you have a partner and it is double the fun as you can go faster and share it with your other half!
Rent one from Western Kayak canoe if you live on the mainland. If you come to Vancouver island, then I recommend you go see Allen. He owns the Westcoast Outdoors in Sooke! Tell him Stephen sent you and he'll take good care of ya

The storage on this craft is phenomenal. 3 hatches altogether and you can even put a cooler at the back of your seat. It also has fishing rod holders, Lowrance ready if you're into fishing . The new 180 degrees Mirage Drive also has kick up fins to minimize damage to your turbo fins should you hit a rock/Log.

Skip to 32 minutes and 8 seconds of the video and you will see the Hobie AI sail in light wind near the Seal islets ...

Your right pontoon took a bit of a dive near the end of the first video - have you ever flipped the boat? If so, I’m guessing you’d right it by standing on one pontoon (sinking it) and pulling the boat over. Looks like you were moving along. Any estimate of usual speed?

As my paddling partner continues to have shoulder issues, a craft that can be paddled or sailed has a certain appeal.

Hi CM... LOL , I love this model as it has literally all the features I need. I'll list the pros and cons for ya.

Pros: It can handle as much as 50km/hr wind at quarter of a sail as I'm still learning. 15-20km/hr wind is more enjoyable at full sail, 25-30 is hair raising, and 35-40 is white knuckles all the way.

It literally take 5 minutes to assemble the AKAS, AMAS, SAIL. When there's no wind, I usually leave the accessories at home/onshore where I'm camping. The 2015 is the newer model with improvements such as the Vantage seating with multiple angles for adjustments and also has lower lumbar support, which I love as I have lower back issues. No more sitting in the puddle (older models) by the seat as it has the drainage toggle which will magically make all your splash water disappear... LOL . The seat itself can be removed and pulled out the foot pegs and you can have a chair to sit on the beach having your morning coffee/sandwich.

The Keel on the right side is very useful when I'm out kayaking and the ocean is rough, waves, swells,... etc. I just pull on the knob towards me and it drops down and help stabilize the kayak as I foot pedal. The mirage drive is very efficient and fast. I've out pedal regular Sit-Inside-Kayakers but NOT the Surfski as I have one as well. Those are super fast Sit-on-Top and Very skinny & tippy.

Hatches are large and space is generous from bow to stern, so you can really load up this baby for an expedition for sure. You can accessorize it with trampolines to take on passengers, rated 200lbs on each side. It's plastic, very durable. When you buy it new, everything comes with it like the paddle, foot pedal drive, sail... except for the wheel... LOL

Cons: it's heavy! 105lbs, you'll need the big ass wheel to move it around. Thankfully it's easy, just plug and roll away.
Expensive as hell!!! New one will set you back over $7K... a used one will range from $4k-6K depending on the condition it's in...
Fairly low maintenance, just rinse with water each time you go out on the ocean, spray the metal parts with some WD40 or Marine grade lubricant and you're good to go!

I hope that help answer your questions... if you have any other queries, I'll try and answer it.
Happy paddling/pedaling LOL

This is how I typically transport on my Prius. The single hull alone can swallow 11 dry bags and food supplies easily. If you need more stowage, the tramps can further carry additional gear.

And this is what it looks like at foot pedal cruising speed. 1hr one ☝️ way on Cameron Lake... humongous lake!

Last but not least, never leave my "Beer Keg" at home... LOL Always take it with me when I hit the waves every weekend, rain, shine or snow, I do it all.

VIP. thank you for the additional info. I spent a little time with Google and learned about it and some alternatives. Too bad the Fulmar 19 was discontinued. I saw a used “Island” for sale in the $2500 range but of course one never knows the condition unless you can see it (and sometimes, not even then). Thank you for sharing this alternative to straight paddling.

Welcome, any earlier models than 2015 would be cheaper. Those ones tend to submarine into the water when sailing, thus came the new mod for 2015 and the bump in price. The earlier models aka as Hobie adventure are better for arm paddling than the new ones as the new mod for the AI are made more for sailing ... higher, dryer, faster and can handle more wind.
