great way to ring in the new year with a short jaunt into English Bay and False Creek for a quick 1 paddle! Let the paddling days count commence!

Hey Mike, Where are the pictures of the crazy bathers? I wonder if any kayakers went for a swim . In fact Bart of Kayakrak.ca, who isn't a subscriber to WCP did take the plunge. Good for him!

    Happy New Year!

Saturday morning, Jan 3rd, the usual gang met at the clubhouse near the banks of the Danube, we launched just at sunrise, beautiful day, not a single cloud in the sky but 6 below zero.

we got stopped by solid ice close to the turningpoint at km 12.

on the way downriver a angry capitan honked at us like crazy, either he was drunk or had never seen kayakers at this time of the season.

actually i purposely avoided heading out to the polar bear swim and hit the water in later afternoon, i was a man with a mission ie following a very specific training program, so these days paddling is mostly related to that. saving the fun recreational paddles for later in the spring!

I paddled out of Cadboro bay in a welcome repreve from the gales and snow. I couldn't avoid the ice, though, and had to chisel my boat off the van. I put in at Cadboro bay and went to go look around oak bay to get an even closer look at what the eastern gales had done to it. I found something exhilirating - a fresh wreck poking up from the bottom. From there, I crossed the channel to Discovery island for a little stretch and headed back in for some well deserved coffee. It was a bright, sunny day , and the north winds made for a challenging bunch of headwind on the way home. More about it on the blog link in my sig below.

Another productive pool session for me. Roll left woohoo, roll right woohoo repeat.

Didn't really want to paddle off the beaches until the raw sewage dissipates. With all the rain and snow every beach in the area is listed as 'Unsafe'. Greater Victoria really needs to get their butts in gear and replace their dinosaur of a sewer system.

    Caddy Bay Victoria

It was great to get out again, but with the light breeze it was still kind of cold around the nose

Went for a night paddle last evening with some canoeist friends in Port Moody. It was quite foggy when we left but the fog lifted a short while after we got on the water.

    Great shots Dan!

    As for my paddling speed:
I'm usually way slower then everyone else  And for some reason it looks like I'm just flying along... Trust me it wasn't the case

I have another video were, towards the end (about 2/3) the video you can see me and my paddling cadence.

    Cheers,

I think I paddled from Crescent Island, across the Fraser River over to Ruskin Dam and back. 15 km.
If you look carefully you can see the lovely snow capped mountains in the distance, glistning in the sunlight.

Listen closely and you can hear the Ruskin generators in the distance.

Paddled from Island View beach to Halibut Island. Then to D'Arcy Island, took a nice leisurely spin around it, exploring all the little islets and rock gardens. Back up the Sidney channel, around the northern tip of James Island and a fantastic coast back to Island view on the waves and current.

    :D Feeling fully 'adjusted' now.

A beautiful day at Hayward lake. Just touching the fog. A good portion is still frozen solid. [IMG]
