I've been kayaking for 2 years now and have a Perception America plastic boat. While practicing self rescue in the lake I decided to see just how buoyant my boat is when full of water. Well it was disappointing to see the foam block installed by the manufacturer was just enough to keep the boat on the surface. With the slightest touch the boat sunk like a rock.

So this inspired me to change the foam float. I got a slab of blue foam used to keep docks afloat. Cut a piece the same size as the original and installed it. The new foam is 8" thick where the original was only 4". With some tailoring I got a perfect fit. I also put in a 2" thick slab of foam just behind my seat at the dry wall for the added stability, not that it needed it, I can now sleep better knowing I have it.

Now the boat will allow me to sit inside without sinking when full of water. I can't imagine why the manufacturer would put so little foam in it?

ALSO... as my rear dry storage hatch.... I made safety straps to keep the cover on the hatch. I found if my dry hold floods, the boat is sitting vertical under water and is not recoverable at all, aside from having a rescue boat tow me to shore. I may keep an inflated beach ball in it just for the added security.

All the more reason to build a wood kayak! :D

All kidding aside, I need to put some safety foam in my fishing kayak. If the "rodpod" hatch comes lose and I get hit with a big enough wave, it will sink!
