    Dave Kruger is gone

Ah man, I will miss reading Dave's posts and responses to other posts. Although I have not been around much of late, this site is one of very few where I feel like I am hanging out with like minded family and Dave was one of those I would always search out. Dave lived doing what he loved doing...

    Preparing for solo trips

John, that is exactly what I have for a pfd...that red ball on the cord is the quick release. The ring on the back of the webbing belt is what I have used for attaching tow ropes when helping other folks who need help. I'd much rather have a tow rope attached to me than my boat...better control...

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

That's not a bad idea BUT I don't want to scare anyone bigger than me. I don't really believe in Halloween anyway...but I do like some of the candy...especially the dark caramels.

    Preparing for solo trips

John, incidentally, my Kokotat pfd has a built-in tow belt with a sturdy metal ring, that was one of the reasons why I bought it.

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

Got all of my wood strips ripped. Next move is to wrap the strips, stack them somewhere then get the strongback and forms back onto the workbench and get the forms aligned properly. Once done, I will get to work stripping the hull. John, got the resizing software...works great. Roy222, notice...

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

I selected the design for overall shape and width. I do like the lower bow/stern...not a fan of wind issues. I am thinking to set it up to take a mast and sail for those days when we want to play with the wind a bit. I am not quite decided to use staples or not...I do plan to work with great...

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

John, I will do that for you, will take me a while because I have to reduce the size of the images...some are too large for this site...some are not

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

The link takes you to the images I have taken to map out the Mystic River build. I went out to buy some good Sitka spruce boards in Edmonton and managed to find an excellent source for clear yellow cedar, one board of which I purchased to look at for this build. I managed to rip strips out of...

    Preparing for solo trips

Hi, Pauline, I have done a fair bit of paddling, a few 1000-kms mostly on moving inland waterways, rivers, lakes, big lakes, huge lakes, lakes so big you can't see the other side, and, of course, some ocean stuff but not much. I would suggest you look at piecing together a ditch kit. This kit is...

So, thoughts on the demise of Mountain Equipment Co-op?

I got my membership over 20 years ago...most of the gear I used to do my cross-western Canada paddling trip came from MEC. For a bit, I thought maybe it was being taken over by REI, I would have been ok with that because REI would have rebuilt MEC back into what it used to be. Fortunately, all...

So, thoughts on the demise of Mountain Equipment Co-op?

If true this is sad news. I did visit one MEC a couple of years ago, a big new store in south Edmonton, didn't feel the same as the old and smaller downtown location which was shut down a few years ago. The new one seems...big box-like...like walking into Best Buy or The Brick...I guess all good...

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

Here is the link, John. It's a pretty canoe design and should be half the weight of our current olden fibreglass design. I couldn't afford the few clear cedar boards available but I did forage through the fencing/decking cedar boards at a RONA and found some almost knot-free 2x6's which will...

Building the Mystic River Tandem Canoe

Just noticed that there is a builders forum here...so I am moving my stuff over here so that it is located in the appropriate forum. Thought I would let y'all know that I have started building Nick Shades Mystic River Tandem Canoe design. It will be of western red cedar/sitka spruce construction...

    Don Starkell article

I have read both of Don's books and I have read Kabloona...I believe Victoria. In fact, my kayak, the VJ Guardian Spirit, is named, in part, for Victoria Jason. I did the same thing she did: headed off into the unknown (at least unknown in our heads) and did what I wanted to do to get through...
