Dry Guide Coat for Sanding Gelcoat

Very interesting. Just curious, how do you know that the dry guide coat powder is gone because you've sanded out all the imperfections and not just gone because your sander sucked it all up in the dust collector? Also, what product are you using for the brush on gelcoat? The results look fantastic.

    Refinishing Worn/Discoloured Kevlar

If I screw up, sand too hard, and do get some Kevlar fuzz, what is the extra work required to deal with it? I'm hoping to avoid that situation but just want to know my options. Thanks

    Refinishing Worn/Discoloured Kevlar

Fantastic, thanks for the replies folks, it looks like so far we're heading towards a consensus of epoxy only. I read that the minimum cure temperature for West System 105/207 is 16°C, although they also show a diagram with a range of cure temperatures with the low end in the single Celsius...

    Refinishing Worn/Discoloured Kevlar

I have a circa 1998 Bluewater Freedom 17 Tripper in their Nylon/Kevlar midweight layup that is showing some wear and discoloration on the interior and am hoping for some feedback and advice on options to refinish the interior. The Issues There is wear, exposed fabric, some rough/fuzzy patches...

    Solo Canoe advice?

Or, how about a rescue stirrup? Instead of looping it over/around the double blade paddle as shown in the image below, loop it around the yoke or a central thwart. Some suggest a rescue stirrup hung off the canoe's bow or stern and a cowboy style re-entry but personally I feel like the narrow...

    Solo Canoe advice?

The double float bag cradle is an interesting idea. In a similar vein, even a single float bag on the re-entry side might provide enough additional buoyancy to keep the gunwale on the re-entry side from going underwater and letting more water in. It would provide a similar stabilizing force as...

    Solo Canoe advice?

Andrew, feel free to PM me if you're in the Vancouver area and find your recommended length is 280 cm per the Bending Branches' sizing chart below. I'd be happy to loan you my paddle for a bit to try it out. As far as trying out other sizes, I know Mitchell's Canoe up on the Sunshine Coast...

    Solo Canoe advice?

I occasionally paddle a 17' Bluewater Freedom Tripper solo from a DIY minicell foam kneeling saddle just behind the yoke. A centre paddling position reduces the windage effect of one end way up in the air (a load would also do this) and is preferred for asymmetrical designs like my canoe that...

    Ordering thru the states

UPS Standard and Fedex Ground both charge on a sliding scale for customs clearance. Taking a declared value of ~$1000 for example, you're looking at $72.10 with UPS and $60.10 with Fedex. UPS Express and Expedited have free customs clearance, Fedex Express looks to be free as well (but don't...

    Ordering thru the states

If your only option is to ship by courier and you're not keen on overpaying for something that Canada Post only charges $9.95 to do, then you can avoid the brokerage fees by self-clearing the package yourself at your nearby CBSA office. There's plenty of info available online on how to do this...
