    Varnish

A couple of varnish questions. 1. The varnish seems a little thick. About the consistency of honey. This is too thick? If I thin it, should I use Petit thinner as the can says, or is any thinner ok? 2. I put a black "racing stripe" on the hull below the deck chine. After varnishing I realized I...

    Varnish

We shall see after the first coat. It's 19 degrees out so opening the windows isn't an option. I may hold off until an unseasonably warm day. In theory, supposed to have a few in February.

    Varnish

I wanted to get the boat in the water while the weather was warm and didn't get as much varnish on as I wanted, so I was looking to do a few more coats as a winter project. I also wanted to take care of a few minor imperfections in the varnish. The boat is in the basement where the temperature...

    Varnish

I forgot to post pictures of the finished product. The bow and midship graphics are rice paper. The stern graphics are decals. So... after the trouble of figuring out how to varnish the tape someone pointed out that you put the tape on AFTER you varnish. That way you can replace it every year...

    Hullivator 898

Yes, I saw that is what is needed. Thule website isn't a help. It says there are no Thule crossbars that fit my vehicle.

    Hullivator 898

Has anyone had success with a crossbar on a Buick SUV for the Hullivator? I know the factory crossbar won't work. I see conflicting information online. Loading my 17' Arctic Tern solo after a long paddle can be challenging. I've found some used Hullivators locally, but don't want to pull the...

    Greenland Paddles for novice?

I've been working with someone about every other week. It does seem a sore shoulder almost forces proper technique- it only seems to hurt when I get lazy. What kind of length do you use for a GP? Same as the euro?

    Greenland Paddles for novice?

I built my Arctic Tern 17. I have a 220 “Euro Blade”. I’m a novice kayaker. I had rotator cuff injuries in the past. (Lacrosse). I’m “advanced” in years, but in good shape. I am taking some lessons but also kayaking on my own. The river is just too close. I enjoy going long distance, but I...

    Varnish

Last night we kept the windows open in the house. Which means... fall is around the corner. I probably have a couple of months of paddling left without a dry suit. So my thoughts have turned to taking care of the scuff marks on the boat this winter and other maintenance. Those didn't take long...

    Finished

Some things I did different from the plans. 1. I did stich/glue on the hull, but then went to taping the deck to the hull as I got more comfortable. 2. I rounded the coaming. 3. I added deck lines for safety. 4. Notched the hatch toggles. 5. Added the compass. 6. I went with the suggestion here...

Well, as finished as you can ever be.

    Finishing up...

Those are them. I will try that. Getting there.

    Finishing up...

So the good idea fairy struck before varnishing. It would be much easier to resin the half-rounds on the hatches after I varnish. Just sandpaper the half-round bottoms, roughen up that area of the hatch and resin. Now I'm thinking that wasn't such a good idea. Will the resin stick to varnish...

    Hand toggles

I went with this. https://www.bellforestproducts.com/hobby-wood/ Turned it into this. It's crude, but I like the look of the wood (black walnut in this case). Soaked in teak oil. I start installing the hardware this afternoon. We shall see how it turns out.

    Varnish

I think it needs to sit more before taping. I was taping the middle of the stripe, and it seemed to be pulling up the varnish. For the last few coats I used the edge of the stripe as the tape line. So when I did the deck I taped just below the stripe. Doing the side/keel I taped just above it on...

    Varnish

Minor varnish issue. I put a black "pinstripe". It appears that using a green scrubby doesn't scuff it enough and some varnish peeled. Should I strip all the varnish from the pinstripe and redo it? Just strip those peels and use sandpaper to scuff it?

    Varnish

The first coat went well. A couple of small "holidays", but I was afraid of going back over and making it too thick so I left for the second coat. I think the second coat I will try the roller versus foam brush. I started with the foam brush on the coaming and stuck with it. The only other issue...

    Pad eyes

I hadn’t considered that difference between kayaking and sailing. I will leave well enough alone and stick with the ones provided.

    Pad eyes

Ahhh... I already drilled two holes for the pad eyes, so I either stay with what I have or some other two hole hardware. I know from sailing most fixtures are either brass or stainless. Not with kayaks? Is there an issue with that? Not sure which would look better. Stay with the standard black...

    Pad eyes

Yes, for the deck lines and shock cords.
