    Kayakers missing near Victoria

Equipment, experience, and the huge lack of knowledge are the big ones I see lacking a lot of in kayaking and hiking and unfortunately that often leads to problems. I once had to rescue a young girl in the middle of the Pitt river who had a fold up polyethylene boat bought off Amazon, that...

    Kayakers missing near Victoria

That’s so unfortunate. Probably we will never know the circumstances that led up to it. I don’t want to speculate, and I hope that they do find them ok somewhere, but at this point it seems unlikely. As we all know things can go wrong real fast.

    Cockpit size safety

How about fitting size 13 booties into most boats, with thick toe and heal rands on them, that’s my challenge. Even have to upsize a bit for the dry suit. My feet are always jammed in in a V shape. Plus knees that don’t bend like they used to. Trying to purchase another boat is a real challenge...

Which VHF radio would you buy?

Jeff I’m not sure, I don’t know how they tune them. By shortening it do you mean the bottom coil? Maybe Smiley customer service could help answer that, but I suspect you’re going to actually have to have some electronic test equipment to do it properly.

    Can a tarp be re-waterproofed?

No alcohol, I just sprayed about a 2’x2’ area, but I would say make sure it’s clean first. As I mentioned it no longer feels sticky, or any stiffness from the spray and has no other negatives at this point, but now I have noticed that all the taped seams in the rest of the tent have all cracked...

    Can a tarp be re-waterproofed?

I’ve sprayed this on a small portion of a very sticky tent fly. Just a very light spray and the stickiness is gone, it dries quickly and is very flexible the nylon or polyester seems no different than before except no longer sticky, and it doesn’t stick to itself either when folded. As far as...

    Can a tarp be re-waterproofed?

https://www.asbestos.com/products/talcum-powder/#:~:text=Contamination%20levels%20of%20asbestos%20in,if%20a%20product%20is%20contaminated. Be careful, all talc should be considered suspect, due to possible asbestos contamination. Even if it says asbestos free. Silica dust is now considered the...

Which VHF radio would you buy?

Make sure if you get a HX890 you have the current software installed, V2.00, currently the software is almost identical to that which was installed on the HX870 class D unit. But if you get an earlier issue, it may not and then you’ll be missing out on a few updated features that the HX890 was...

Which VHF radio would you buy?

How does it work in the U.S. with MMSI. Here in Canada an MMSI# is only attached to a vessel radio, with the vessel name and number. An MI# is attached to a VHF portable that is not attached to a particular vessel with a name and number, like a kayakers radio, but I guess you could have an MMSI...

Which VHF radio would you buy?

Just something to be aware of with Smiley medium gain antennas. Smiley can tune an antenna to the frequency you choose. This will be the centre or advertised frequency. It will only work +/- 5Mhz from your tuned frequency. The further you are from the centre frequency the lower the gain. A 3db...

    Can a tarp be re-waterproofed?

I can understand your views on MEC, as far as I’m concerned they’re pretty much all washed up. Even REI is on the way out. Not at all what either of them used to be. I’ve bought a handful of things from MEC since their sale and don’t think of them as I used to. I’m sure I’d agree on all your...

    Can a tarp be re-waterproofed?

Serratus guides tarp, wow that’s going back a bit. I loved my Serratus gear and had lots of it. I had the guides tarp and the scout tarp. I threw both out a few years ago when they turned to sticky fly paper. Just this month threw out a brand new MSR single person tent never used from 2016, so...

Which VHF radio would you buy?

I have an HX 890, I’ve never had to use it in an emergency. The am/fm I never use. It comes with a 5 cell AAA battery case, which you could solar charge on a long trip. An extra battery was $75 a couple of years ago. You can get a waterproof remote mic/speaker for shoulder mount. The DSC button...

Lol, ok thanks, it will be bent alright. Maybe hold it one way for right turns and the other way for left turns and play hockey with it later, or use it for firewood at camp.

    Folding serrated knives

Hopefully there not making new subs out of carbon fibre, unless there making Putin one. Oops forgot, no politics allowed. The first SR71 Blackbirds were made out of Russian titanium too. Back to knives though, if your looking for a good camp /survival knife, check out Bushcraft Canada, but even...

    Folding serrated knives

I picked up an extra one myself, it could be the last chance to get one. They are a nice knife. Certainly not cheap with tax and shipping. Got one years ago at MEC, but don’t remember the cost exactly, but it was quite a bit cheaper. Wonder if they had a big shipment of them headed out to BC...

Nice, well for sure there is a learning curve to a Greenland paddle, but at least if you can try one, even for a day, you still had a chance to try one.

By the way Gearlab makes a two piece carbon coupling for people who want to make their own two piece wooden paddle.

I’d build one myself too, but every time I go to Home Depot I can’t find a straight piece of wood.

I think a retailer would sell a lot more of them if people could try them out first. They only need a set or two, not a big collection of rentals, just make it on a reserve only basis. Let people try a couple of sizes out, with the money going towards a future purchase if desired. OMG monkey see...
