    Vegetarian and Vegan recipe thread

+ 1 for the dehydrator. I'm also veggie and have dried pretty much everything in it, from full meals such as stews, chili, pasta sauce etc to onions, mushrooms, peppers, sweetcorn, carrots, blah, blah.... +1 for Another Fork in the Trail by Laurie March To add some interest to lunch, hummus...

Forgive me Neptune for I have sinned.....

   Hopefully now that I have confessed my sins, I won't get a visit from the Codfather - I don't want to find a fish head in my bed....

Glad you enjoyed it and that it provided a few laughs! Every time I hear an owl, I am taken right back to that night

    Nuchatlitz Cabins

aha! The other cabin was called Sea Watch, but was also referred to as Witt's End (owned by the Witt family!), but their website is no longer active. Don't know if anyone from the water taxi at Zeballos could help? Rachel

    Nuchatlitz Cabins

Back in 2012 we stayed in a 4 bed cabin partly owned by David & Olive Scott. They used to advertise in the back of a couple of the magazines. The email address I have is doscott2000@hotmail.com, but no idea if they still have it or are still renting it out. We absolutely loved being there. Not...

Haida Gwaii - 24 days in August 2015

Thanks Tex & Pawsplus :) The photos are a mix between a Nikon D5200 DLSR, an Olympus Tough TG-1 waterproof camera and a Sony Cybershot WX220 point and shoot - they all have their advantages and disadvantages! Still no paddling on the horizon at the moment :( but I'm sure it's only a matter of...

Haida Gwaii - 24 days in August 2015

Well spotted - yes, I used silicon cups! I think I picked then up for $1 in Save-on-Foods or Superstore. They worked well because they hold their shape in the oven :D

Haida Gwaii - 24 days in August 2015

Thanks guys :) Yeah, fluffy white towels aren't much use to outdoors people as they show the mud and grime too easily, but I did enjoy using one back at the hotel! Pawistik - you will have a great time with your family! It is a magical place. I wrote it as though I was talking to a friend...

Great trip report and fabulous photos Alex! We're now living 6000kms away from the Island and currently without a boat, so paddling vicariously through others trip reports! This one really tweaked the heart strings this morning! Happy paddles Rachel

    Whats your favorite lunch

Hummus etc. dehydrated at home and crumbled into ziploc bags. Takes 2 minutes to rehydrate and you can make it as wet or dry as you like it. Last trip we had navy bean and sun dried tomato hummus, greek roasted red pepper dip (makes like hummus), smoky lentil pate and protein power goddess...

    How much water?

We like to go with 3 litres per person per day, which allows some spare. We have never run out. There is also an old cistern on Clarke Island if you head inland. It would definitely need filtering and cannot be relied upon, but had water at the beginning of July a few years ago. However, it's...

    Late Sept: Brokens or Bunsbys?

We've paddled the Broken Group at the beginning of July, beginning of September and towards the end of September. The last trip around 17th September was VERY quiet. 2 campsites completely to ourselves. When we spoke to Parks rep, he suggested there were only approx 20 paddlers in the islands...

    Taking eggs

We have taken eggs on multiple paddling/backpacking trips over the years and have never worried about them. While hiking Kilimanjaro, the porters placed them in old paint cans filled with sand to keep them safe when being hefted around. We're just packing for a 2 week trip and haven't got the...
