Paddler
Comoxpaddler's similarly entitled thread reminded me of my trip a few years ago. It was for myself and friends where I've avoided sharing much of it with anyone else.. I consider you all in the forum friends, so here goes the start of the trip..:
June 12 -- July 17 2007
For the above map: The GPS logged a rounded (usually only on at sporadic moments to get some tracks for posterity's sake) 937 km route from start to day 32 when my leaking Magellan eXplorist fried itself...... Only ~165 km to home from that point.
Day 1 - Leaving Willows Beach
Day 2 - to Prevost Island ....mud for the morning start.
Day 2 - to De Courcy Island
Day 3 - recuperation at Nanaimo ..... Some eggs didn't survive too well for day 3's breakfast on De Courcy. As I was heading past Nanaimo, extreme nausea quickly set in, to the point where I could barely cope with remaining steady in the boat. After only a few hours of paddling I gave in to a hotel for that night before continuing on the next morning.
Day 4 - mid-Georgia Straight
Day 5 - to Sandy Island
Day 6 - to Miracle Beach
I erred and forgot gloves in Victoria...... The plan was to meet m parents up on Quadra, but to relieve badly blistering hands, I called them to bring some gloves on their way up island and met them next to the Comox ferry terminal. For the start of the trip I began using a new -- but unused -- Werner paddle. My existing calluses weren't in the new spots of pressure due to the more oval shaped grip applied.
The third ailment in less than a week was of severe chafing under my arms on the sides of my torso. I tried a new synthetic long sleeved shirt for under the drysuit but the damned thing tore my skin apart by the second day. For the rest of the trip, each morning I was applying fresh bandages to protect the skin and help the damned open sores heal.
All teething pains, and what I planned the east coast of the Island for.
Day 7-11 - to Drew Harbour and then Discovery Lodge I met up with my parents for a few nights and then took off for a short paddle north along Quadra to Discovery Lodge for a few more days of relaxation and exploring.
My goal and test was 6-7 days to get up to Quadra before I came closer to being far more isolated. It was pleasant, but more of a chore to get on to where I truly wanted to have fun.
More to come...either tomorrow or after I return from Mexico.
