Featheron
Paddler
As far as I am aware this bay at the NE end of Princess Royal Island does not have a name. It is 1.5 kms west of Kingcome Point where Fraser Reach meets McKay Reach and Ursula Channel.
The bay faces NW. There are two beaches. The main beach is steep with boulders and did not provide a safe landing in a westerly swell. There is a small narrow gravel beach 300 m to the west that provided a safer landing, this is the campsite (53 17.3' N, 128 55.8' W, from SPOT GPS on the beach). There is not a lot of room for camping due to the narrow beach and steep forest behind. We had three tents in our party. I camped on a raised rock platform big enough for my 2-person tent, one person camped on a gravel platform at very top of the beach and one person cleared an area in the forest.
The evening high tide (4.1 m at Bella Bella) flooded most of the beach (see photo) but not our tents. Camping would be very limited on a spring high tide. Fresh water is available from a stream at the west end of the beach. There is no outhouse.
Despite the limited space this campsite is a usefully located for paddlers transiting the Inside Passage. Also see Wild Coast 2 page 247.
Campsite, notice the tent on the raised platform at the left of the photo (July 15, 2009, tide 3.7 m at Bella Bella)
Limited beach space at high tide (July 15, 2009, tide 4.1 m at Bella Bella)
Approaching the bay. The main beach is on the left and the smaller beach we camped at is slightly hidden on the right (July 15, 2009, tide 1.9 m at Bella Bella)
