Circumnavigating South Pender

At peak exchanges, there can be considerable current flowing into or out of Bedwell Harbour and between the two Penders. Enough that a kayak can't make progress against it. This effect can extend to Higgs Bay. So check the current predictions, and plan your paddling times and direction of travel accordingly.

I agree that checking the current atlas is really helpful and combine that with the wind direction to estimate the best times. It can be tricky going around Teece Point and around Gowlland Point, and the currents are often strong around Tilley Point. Going under the bridge between the Pender’s isn’t too bad but the direction of flow often changes an hour or more before slack tides. I am more concerned with boat traffic on weekends.

Done it three times. There are a series of rips between Tilly Point and Gowland Point. These tend to form and disperse quickly, so if you come upon something daunting, pull into the kelp for 15 minutes and conditions will change. While you wait, cast your eyes seaward as harbour porpoises are very often observed. Be sure to check out the rock slot on the south side of Camp Bay near Higgs Point.

Thanks for all the replies.

After paddling down the west side of North Pender and experiencing the currents there, we decided to stay conservative and not head to the south tip. Need more technique to be really comfortable.

Had a great four days with a super nice paddle back to Otter Bay from Poet's Cove along the east side of North Pender. Got to experience the big rolling wake from a super ferry as an extra bonus.
