I put a removal compass setup on my wife's boat this spring, using a Ritchie XP-99 kayaker surface mount compass and a Ritchie kayaker tie-down kit.

Not a very exciting picture, just out enjoying a local creek in the spring (no waves or whales, just the occasional Blue Heron), but it does show the compass well.

I found that the attachments for my deck compass tensioned the perimeter safety lines, which I didn't like.
So I've added 'secondary' lines for the compass. They are strong enough (2 x 600# Q-Powerline) to use as tow points or grab handles, too.
