Dave Kruger is gone

Condolences to you and yours, Ian.

Thank you for sharing the link to the obituary. I never met Dave in person, but I'll continue to draw from the knowledge and wisdom he has so generously shared here on WCP. Thank you, Dave!

Organic chemistry was a necessary hurdle in the career path I chose. I stumbled badly; perhaps if he'd been a mentor, I'd still be in the midwest practicing dentistry. Instead my career took me to the shores of Chesapeake Bay and then to Puget Sound. I discovered a love of building and paddling kayaks, aided many times by Dave's wise counsel. So, by not meeting him at the outset, I was able to count him as a friend, guide and inspiration in these later years. I treasure the messages and comments we shared. Yes Dave, Thank you and rest in peace!

I am saddened to read of Dave's passing.

I always admired Dave's positive community spirit, and how quickly he volunteered valuable guidance on topics. He was informed and knowledgeable, but all so positive, helpful and gracious when steering us in the right direction. He was a leader by example.

This thread is titled "Dave Kruger is gone". My initial reaction is that we should strive to ensure Dave is not gone. Our current expressions of sorrow and admiration help to keep his memory alive. Yet I would prefer that as a starting point towards a more lasting recognition. Might we generate an appropriate and respectful memorial for Dave and his significant contributions?

Subject to approval of his family, I would be pleased to contribute time and money towards a project which appropriately acknowledges and honours Dave's memory. A recognition might take any number of forms. It perhaps might include an educational, training, safety or navigational feature or program recognizing Dave. It could be an event in his name, marine camp, rendezvous, award, or other initiative or amenity. Possibly a feature on the site in his name? There are many possible avenues to consider.

Dave was a builder of community spirit across borders. He was a very positive influence. Let us, as a community, respond in kind.

In my mind, we have work to do.

I will sure miss this guy. A good friend and paddling partner for a number of trips around the lower Columbia River. Just a gem of a guy in so many ways. He was so knowledgeable in so many topics especially those concerning kayaking and Folbots.

It is my hope that subject to approval of Dave's family, a project will be developed to appropriately honour Dave's memory, spirit, and contributions. Perhaps a modest sized cross border committee might form to canvass avenues for recognizing Dave, plus raise funds for implementation.

Please give participation your thought and I will soon call out with directions on volunteering and follow-up.

I would love to participate in anything like that.

Ah man, I will miss reading Dave's posts and responses to other posts. Although I have not been around much of late, this site is one of very few where I feel like I am hanging out with like minded family and Dave was one of those I would always search out. Dave lived doing what he loved doing most...I took a lesson from that and have worked to live the same way. So long, Dave, see you some time later.
