Garmin offers a little-known customer service whereby the company will, at its discretion, replace old, non-functional, out-of-warranty GPS units for approximately half price, so long as Garmin still has the old unit in stock. Even if your old model has been discontinued, Garmin still might have it in stock, so it is worth asking. After my old GPSMap 78 died during a trip on the central coast last fall, Garmin sent me a brand-new replacement for $120 USD.

The GPSMap 78 is a discontinued model. It used to retail new for $200 USD when it first came out. The current model, the GPSMap 79, currently retails for $299 USD (or $250 USD on sale). So there is a moderate savings to be had from using the replacement program. I initiated the replacement by contacting Garmin through their customer service chat function.
