Sevylor Eskimo advice please

Audrey Sutherland

Every one on this list, with the exception of Fester should go straightout and Google Audrey Sutherland.

What do you mean inflateables are toys? It's a good thing Audrey does not have such prejudices. I don't own and cannot see myself buying a pump up boat, but I don't think they should have been dismissed out of hand, especially for a 33 foot sailboat. Jeeze half the tenders in the Gulf Islands must be inflatable Zodiacs.

I think a lot of us like to advise people to get what we've got. It's a comfortable way to reinforce our self image and even justify some of our own choices.

When it comes to recommending kayaks we should try to think out side of those preferences that define our own personnal paddling choices. Of course that's hard to do - maybe this would not be an issue if people just went right to the top of the food chain and bought British Boats.

Glock

There was a really interesting article about Audrey Sutherland in a past Sea Kayaker magazine article -- I'll see if I can find which issue it was in.

Um... no, should we? Chris is trying out boats at Elk Lk tonight from Pacifica, but he hasn't been able to fit we've found second hand in any so far.
I've been downtown 3 times in the past couple of weeks trying on pfd's and finally settled on one this morning at Ocean River. It was easier buying the CD Whistler than trying to find a pfd I liked!

LOL - just checking.....Barclay's Exchange on Douglas had one for sale that I spotted on the way by yesterday. Called this morning but it was sold already.....figured it may have been you :p

And we know how much you need a PFD.

So what kind of PFD did you end up getting?

I didn't see that coming   .

It's a Stohlquist Betsea, ladies cut, mango in colour :)

Mark, are you setting all these beginners loose in your Romany? I didn't know you had such a devilish streak in you

The salesman said the next thing I needed was a sprayskirt (is he right?), but the inexpensive ones started at $80... and I was already parting with enough today for the pfd. I'll keep an eye on the MEC gear swap and also have an excuse to check our their new shop when it opens.

I'd thought about making one, so I discretly had a good look at the construction and I've decided I can't very easily get all the components to make a really skookum one, so I'll save my efforts. My mango rainwear fabric will have to surface as another project... stay tuned.

Dave, next time you see a boat like that on your lunchtime excursions, would you please put it on hold in Chris' name and send us a note to get our butts downtown to see it?  .

No worries - I'll keep my 8O

I have a nylon spray skirt that is a little too small for your boat, but you're welcome to borrow it to use is as a pattern.

Gotta stay sharp around here.

Brooks has a nylon sprayskirt that will keep you colour coordinated:

Do you think colour coordination will make up for lack of finesse? Actually the other colours of pfd's that fit me would have clashed; mango doesn't go well with lots of colours. I hadn't thought of it until one salesperson asked me what colour my hull was...
I won't get to try out my boat again out until next week at the earliest. I'm on a plane to Castlegar tomorrow and my son took our Jeep with the roof racks to pack his stuff up from his residence at college.

No - I thought I'd learned my lesson! I took a friend out in Minnie (the Tern 14) and she was doing great... until we left the beach after a quick break. She saw me doing my lean turns etc. and thought she'd try leaning the Tern... but with no experience bracing etc. you can understand the result. We'll be heading to a warm lake some time soon to practise some skills training.

Yup - don't leave home without it!

Dave, next time you see a boat like that on your lunchtime excursions...

That's not a lunchtime excusion... he's a Government employee! That's all he does! 8O

Helen, if memory serves there was a article about making your own spray skirt in a recent edition of Sea Kayaker. If you're interested PM me and I will see if I can find it in my library...

Chris, I, two children and a dog went to Elk Lake to try kayaks. My daughter loved the Perception Acadia Scout, I played in a Catalina 14.5 and also a Delta 14.5 just for fun. Chris liked the Expedition Delta 14.5 and two Perception Catalina 14.5 boats. Those Delta boats are super! I'm no expert, but we both really liked them. So many features that the other boats don't have 8). If I hadn't found the CD Whistler, I'd sure be tempted.
When we arrived at the beach there was a photographer from Focus magazine who wanted to take photos for Pacifica's ad in the next issue I think. We gave consent and off we went. I said... no photos if I flip! They laughed like I was joking  We all managed to stay upright, thank goodness. Peter managed to bring 3 boats that Chris fit well! It's really nice dealing with someone who knows their products. No decisions yet, but hopefully we'll all be in kayaks soon.

Um... why did nobody correct me when I called the Perception boat a Catalina   . I can take it, ok  .
I was looking through the Perception catalogue this morning before school with Amy (she wants her boat to be yellow) and there I see a Perception Carolina... Oh Gawd  At least neither is a gin palace!
