I recall seeing a basking shark in Ross Bay, here in Victoria, when I was a teenager spin-casting on a warm June night off the surface water outfall for Columbia chinooks. I was awed as it passed by in about 10 feet of water, above the sand. It would be fun to snorkel with one!
 
I haven't seen one yet. They used to be fairly common .

Apparently they were slaughtered recklessly for years as they were thought to eat salmon and a " nuisance ". DFO had boats mounted with a thick bow knife that used to slice them in half.
