i just picked up a second hand sewing machine and i'm looking for an instruction manual. the machine is a Singer Style Mate Model # 347. i can't figure out how to rig the darned bobbin! :(

thanks Darren. already found that. also found one for ten bucks. i'm too cheap for that, looking for freebees, like maybe somebody already has this old machine and could email me a scanned copy of the manual.

If it's an older and fairly simple machine, I would say that it'll operate like most other sewing machines, and thus you might not need a manual specific to that model. A general purpose "how to use a sewing machine" guide might work fine for you.

I did a quick search in the Vancouver Public Library catalog and found several titles that might be useful. They are in the 646.1 to 646.4 Dewey Decimal call number range, if you were to go browsing the shelf. To find them online, try searching for "sewing machine" as the keyword in the title. The VPL online catalogue is at http://www.vpl.ca/cgi-bin/profile

There are probably some web sites that also provide instruction in using sewing machines as well.

thanks a lot for that link! the 348 is close enough to my machine that the manual works. got it printed out now.

ok. so maybe i ain't too bright right out of the gate, but i do catch on eventually. i took the old singer back and got a refund. then i went to a store (W) and bought a brand new, but basic, machine. guess what? it works and came with instructions and accessories an everything! :)

let this be a lesson. don't buy used machines that are complicated in design. :(

thanks for the help;
sorry for the trouble;

Good move, Daren. That is an investment which will gratify you every time you use it. There is nothing so satisfying as a tool that works well ... ahhhm, well there are a couple other things, but they don't usually happen in the sewing room!! :wink:
