SPOT - Emergency Beacon GPS

I have an EPIRB that I bought from the US and it is therefore registered in the US, free. They did "note" that I was living in Canada and informed me that I should register the device in Canada. I have not, partly because the thing has to go back to the manufacturer to allow this to happen (something I was not aware of when I bought it), and it would cost about $50 plus shipping, I think.

Nonetheless, it seems to me that I am now simply in the same position as a US kayaker who happens to come to Canada on holiday, bringing his US-registered EPIRB.

If we were in the same gnarly seas off the west coast (but not together), got trashed, and independently activated our respective US-registered EPIRBs, what is the difference? It is not as if the US Coastguard is going to wander up to the Brooks Peninsula to give us a hand.

Anyone know the answer?

EPIRBs, Sat phones, whatever are used in emergencies. What is really cool about this device is it's non-emergency function. My significant other frets whenever I go on my solo trips and this is a great device to send the okay message daily. I really like the connection with Google Earth so my location can be tracked. Haven't activated it yet, but will certainly use it a bunch this year.
