Hi folks,
Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on or has paddled a TRAK foldable kayak. They look pretty cool and since I live in an apartment, it might solve my storage and transit problems (low ceiling in the underground parking make it impossible to put a kayak on my jeep)!

I'm a bit nervous as it's rather pricey and this is the first kayak built by this company.

I am mostly interested in day paddling, but would also like the option of going out for a few days.

An idea's would be much appreciated.
:D
Thanks

Nice looking boats, but ~$7k! Woo... 8O

I paddled one at the Ladysmith paddlefest and it was quite nice - the adjustable rocker is neat. They also have one at Pacifica Paddle sports in Victoria. 7K$ may be a bit much though...

OMG I didn't see the price!!!!!! um yeah...... you know you should look in the wcp buy and sell, there is a nice take apart kayak for sale if your looking for something for apartment living.

way too much money for the novelty.

if i ever get a folder, it will be to build a yost type approach. simple procedure, get as good a result as any out there and cheap to build.

How about Klepper? They have been around for a long time, and have proven themselves. I am not sure about the price but I want to say they are at least a little cheaper than $7000.

I have a customer who is trying to sell her three piece Nimbus Horizon S. New it sells for $4675 and she is asking $3900. It is in very good shape. If you're interested, give me a call and I will give you her phone number. You two can work out a deal.

Good thing about this folding kayak is that it changes the rocker rhight?
That means I can travel long distance fast to get there and play on the water. That is so cool that I don't have to take two kayaks anymore :D
( Hey!! I can pack small if I need to 8))

That is 2 kayaks in one, so $7000.00? It sounds reosonable ( not that I can afford :( ) for the benefit of the adjustable keel, if...if it can perform as good as two of those $3500.00 kayaks.

But I wonder how much difference it changes? Dose it changes from one to totaly different type of kayak?

Hummmm, if only I have money... ... I almost forgot! ... And if I have the skill to do all the fun thing with it. Maybe the price will comedown when I got those skills down the road.

I haven't paddled a Trax kayak but I did have one in my possession for a few days and had really good look at it.

My impression of it was:

The cool factor on this kayak is through the roof. It's wickedly cool.

The boat set up very quickly -- in ten minutes it was ready for the water -- only had to look at the instructions once. Very impressive.

But judging from the boat that I had, there's still a bit of refinement before this one is ready for prime time.

One of the hydralic extention pumps used to control the keel and the two chines leaked. This made keeping tension on the fabric next to impossible.

I also wasn't completely sold at the method used to attach the cockpit coaming at the rear deck -- it just didn't seem to get a good seal.

We left the boat tensioned overnight with the highest amount of rocker -- by the morning the hull was twisted at the bow -- enough that it would definitely affect the handling of the boat.

This is certainly a boat that will appeal to the rich yacht owner who has to have the latest and greatest -- and at $6,000 he's probably the only guy that can afford it.

But if I did have that kind of money to spend on a folding boat, I'd rather have a top of the line Feathercraft. Then I'd have a boat that I could actually paddle somewhere.

I think the Trax kayaks have a lot of merit but there's a fair bit of work (refinements) to be done to make it a practical kayak.

Just my opinion.

I've paddle one several times in the last month. The weak part of the boat is the pistons, they do leak overnight. It never affected me while on the water but after racking the boat, it would have reverse rocker in the morning. Other than that, the Traks kayak is probably the best folding boat I've ever paddled. The quality of construction is top notch and the seat is very solid and comfortable. If I could only have one boat and it had to be packable, I would choose this one.

If you can wait a few month, this company has booth at West Coast Kayak Symposium ( was that the name of it?) in mid Sep in Port Townsend, Wash. I believe they would have demo boat. You can try all kinds of kayak there.

Ummm do I know you? Kidding, All ready demanded the time off!

So ya ROAD TRIP!!!!

Being a FC khatsolano owner I was interested in the higher priced competition. I checked one out but didn't paddle it. I could have.
The airbags it comes with leak, and they (trax) know it. Not for $5K plus boys, sorry. THe thing costs a fortune it better be bullet gd proof.

My opnion .. they are out of business.. they just don't know it.
