Here is some info I received from Ocean River Sports about some upcoming sessions. Thought I would share for those that may not be on their distribution list:

Sea Kayaking Newsletter from Ocean River Sports
May, 2005

The great weather appears to have arrived, and the summer kayaking
season has begun. Here's a reminder of a few events to get you excited
and ready for the upcoming paddling season!

Greenland Weekend

If you've ever been curious about those long, skinny, wooden Greenland-style paddles and those skin-on-frame sleek kayaks, you'll be interested in coming down to Ocean River Sports for a presentation from an authority on the matter. Harvey Golden will be visiting us from Portland, Oregon, this Friday night, April 29, 2005, to give a presentation about Greenland-style kayaking. Remember, much of what we know about kayaking today has been passed down over the centuries by skilled kayakers from Greenland who have hunted and travelled in these skin boats for thousands of years. Harvey has travelled the planet taking measurements of surviving examples of Greenland-style kayaks, then tediously built exact replicas of each so that he could paddle these designs and see how the they actually performed. The replicas are a piece of art, and you'll have a chance to see some.

Harvey is also in the process of writing the authoritative text on
Greenland-style kayaks. The book is in it's final stages, but has been
temporarily sidelined by the birth of his first child, who is coming
along for the ride. For all his accomplishments (he can roll more than
30 ways), Harvey is a modest, engaging person, well worth the time to
come listen to, even if you never plan to slip yourself into one of
these nimble, sleek, traditional kayaks.

Greenland-style paddles are very interesting to try. They function in
water similar to how an airplane wing functions in air: lift is created
around the blade, allowing greater ease in rolling and sculling
techniques. I've found that trying a Greenland-style paddle has helped
me to develop new paddling techniques, and I can then transfer these
techniques to my regular "Euro" paddle. You can watch Harvey
demonstrate some fascinating techniques on Saturday, April 30. We'll
have some Greenland-style paddles available to try. If you'd like to
get some instruction on using these paddles, Harvey will be teaching an
Introductory course Saturday afternoon, and he'll be teaching a rolling
and bracing course in the heated pool on Saturday evening.

Chris Duff on Expedition Paddling Techniques

Back by popular demand (and I mean it!), on Friday, May 6, Chris Duff
will give us a presentation on Expedition Paddling Techniques, then
take interested folks out on the ocean the next day for a real hands-on
experience. I was out last year on this course with Chris, and I found
it fascinating! Chris spoke about how he packs his kayak, how he
mentally prepares himself, and some of the interesting skills he
practices to prepare for longer journeys. If you're not aware, Chris
has done some pretty amazing expeditions, such as paddling around
England, Ireland, the south island of New Zealand, and, most recently,
Iceland. During his presentation, Chris will talk about expedition
paddling in general terms, then talk about his specific trips. Chris
has written award-winning books about his exploits, so if you're
looking for a nice read to bring along with you on your next kayaking
trip, consider "On Celtic Tides" or "Southern Exposure."

Chris will be visiting us from Port Angeles, Washington. He's a
sincere, thoughtful presenter; great to listen to whether you're an
armchair adventurer or planning your own expedition.

Expedition Paddling Presentation
Friday, May 6, 7 pm - 9 pm at Ocean River Sports - Free!

Expedition Paddling Techniques
Saturday, May 7, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm at Cadboro Bay.

I would really like to attend both of those presentations but unfortunately, I don't think there's any way I could pull it off. Too bad it was such short notice.
