Yes overuse can spoil an area but, here especially in the busy lower mainland, people will come anyway. Keeping the trails more rustic can help deter people and reduce pressure but an unmaintained trail can cause more damage as people go around swampy areas for instance. Providing bear caches is good though to avoid bear conflict and help mitigate the effects of overuse. The cache in your pic looks new but there have already been caches and tables there for years.
