My wife and I spent the second week of September in the Broughton Archipelago and then the following week we spent in the Broken Group.
We used a water taxi for the first time and had it drop us at Insect Island where we spent the first two nights. The next two nights were spent at Owl Island, one at Mound Island and the last night before heading back to Telegraph Cove was at Little Kaikash on Johnstone Strait. The Broughton area ended up being a beautiful place to explore, lots of small islets to explore off the western coasts of the islands facing the strait. We could easily have spent another three or four days in the area. We did not come across any other kayakers until we crossed Johnstone Strait and even then they were all on their way further east towards Robson Bight. Maybe it was the time of year we were there but it really does come across as an undiscovered area, which is surprising considering the scenery and the amount of available camping. Really beautiful area, well worth making the trip.
Waiting for the water taxi at Telegraph Cove.
Off Eden Island, looking towards Queen Charlotte Strait.
Balancing Rock
Shoreline along Angular Island
Passage between Tracey and Mars Islands
Looking west from Owl Island
Owl Island Sunset
Totem Pole at Village Island
Mound Island Beach
Whitebeach Passage, leaving Mound
Blackfish Sound
Took the Frances Barkley to Sechart, spent two nights on Gilbert Island and then two nights on Gibraltar. Lots of fun playing in the swell off Cree Island but a little too far past our comfort level to travel the outside of the islands. We were here a year ago and it seemed like a completely different trip this time. Last year was nothing but sun and calm waters and this time was generally overcast with bigger water on the outside. Met up with quite a few other kayakers this trip but never felt crowded.
Looking across Coaster Channel with Effingham on the right.
Rocks off Cree Island
Sea Lions between Wouwer and Batley
Cormorants off NW tip of Wouwer
Sea foam off Clarke Island
Cormorants off Clarke
Tiny Group
Gibraltar Sunrise
Somewhere in the Pinkertons
