hey what's the protocol for leaving yr car at the twassen dock. cost per day etc, how pay?

is it likely that all the spaces will be taken (friday at 600pm or 8pm) and i have to walk the yak down the causeway from some other location??

I don't know about availablity of parking on a Friday night -- you might want to call BC Ferries about that.

You guys with your exotic food prep and native dances for entertainment are making me really jealous ... I can't make it!! :(

But, I'm headed up your way in June. Maybe something will jell then. :)

OK... a short list of people with VHF's here:

Mark: callsign West Coast Paddler
Dave: callsign Curious George
Helen and co. (sailboat): callsign Jolie

Andreas, choose a callsign. :?: :wink: Something unique - how about 'Crazy German' :lol: (j/k!)

Anyone else? Have I missed anyone? I'll have mine on all day (8am - 11 pm).

Cell reception is also excellent (Telus network anyways...) from Sw. Bay to Portland Island.

Looking forward to the trip! See you tomorrow! 8)

After reading about all the fun you guys will have this weekend, i envy the westcoastpaddler and feel very much sorry for an austrian river rat who still has to shovel snow and can not come over for the weekend!
:(

@andreas: show all these gas consuming, jet roaring coleman fans the real good stuff and convert them into quiet swedish trangia fans!

the good news for me: i will come over in june and paddle my new feathercraft!
:lol:

I wish you all a great weekend and lots of fun in the Gulf Islands!

Hey
There should be a few parking spots left, but further away. Drive to the ticket booth, ask them to let you drive right up near the ferry ramp, drop your boat and gear off, then go park & walk back.

Mike - you're paddling over from Swartz Bay alone in the dark? Be careful. Hope you have bright lights, chart and compass. Got a radio or cellphone? Why not call (Mark's cell) once you're launched and maybe a few of the hardier types (also with lights) will go out into Shute passage to find you and escort you in.

As for me, I'm preparing to go, but may still bail at the last minute. I'll swim a few laps later and see how it goes.

perfect plan, ian!! thanks - i presume you mean the walk on ticket booth? but it sort of sounds like you actually mean the drive in booths??!

i've got some good topo maps from dan, but marine type are missing - if i feel any thumps in the nite it'll be those dark hard reef sharks!

my vhf is fried, but i'll see if i can get a cell.

and ian, i/ve got a homemade tow harness i'd love to try out - so limp on over and then i'll tow you around after that!! - i need exercise any way i can get it.

I think Darren and I could go for a tow in the double. And it's a win-win situation as you'll get a really good workout. :p

@mark:

welllll, about my call sign :roll: hmmmmm? i guess i go with the crazy german thingy :D

@westcoastwill:
oh ya, after 2 days of worry free cooking the will all like the trangia! i hope i have enough room in my boat to bring the vaude tent! i talked to a local outdoor store and asked them if they couldn't sell them? after we are back from germany we show them our new vaude mark 3 and if they like it, they try to get them in :D

@mike:
be carefull when paddling by your self at night!!! give mark a call before you hit the water. then we know that after that point, it should only take you 1-1.5 hours to cross. will help you setting up in the dark!

see you guys tomorrow!

for tomorrow and sunday they are guessing RAIN :roll:

the crazy cherman :D

Yup... we're packed and ready to go, the Cherokee is in the VGH parking lot with 2 beautiful kayaks strapped on top and the vehicle alarm engaged. We checked the current atlas last night and planned our route to take best advantage of the flow of water rather than fight it all the way :).
3pm - everyone home.
4pm - kids being picked up!!
5pm - dog to the farm
6pm - at the marina.. We have to fill H20 tanks, check engine & fuel, store provisions, load kayaks.... hopefully we make it over before dark!
